Donald Trump criticized companies like ExxonMobil and Chevron in August. The former president stated that these firms were making excessive profits due to fuel shortages during the conflict between Israel and Iran.
Recent corporate results confirm a significant growth in oil company earnings. Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, and Exxon reported high margins on the conversion of crude oil into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel.
Chevron recorded profits in its processing sector four times higher than the previous year. The value reached 4.9 billion dollars from the sale of refined products amid a scenario of tight global supply.
Geopolitical instability is affecting worldwide production. Drone attacks on Russian refineries and disruptions to Middle Eastern infrastructure are putting pressure on the energy supply chain.
The closure of refineries in Europe over the last two decades is worsening the situation. European Union energy commissioner Dan Jørgensen described the current scenario as an energy security crisis.
The rise in oil company profits comes as consumers face higher prices. Persistent global tensions limit the effectiveness of policy measures to control fuel costs.
