Berkshire Hathaway Profit Falls as Cash Pile Hits $377 Billion
Warren Buffett's conglomerate reports a nearly 30% drop in quarterly profit while accelerating share buybacks under CEO Greg Abel.
Berkshire Hathaway reported a 28.2% decline in net income during the third quarter of 2026. The result reached $22.112 billion compared to $30.796 billion in the same period last year.
The volume of cash and short-term securities reached $377.4 billion by the end of September. The company used $9.6 billion to repurchase its own shares during the period. The total amount spent on this strategy in the first nine months of the year adds up to $14.4 billion.
Operating profit fell 5.8% year-over-year. This metric excludes accounting variations and fluctuations in investment gains. Performance was pressured by lower profitability in insurance operations even though the energy and railroad sectors showed growth.
New CEO Greg Abel maintains an active stance on resource allocation. The executive prioritizes buybacks and new investments in companies linked to artificial intelligence. Cumulative net profit for the first nine months of 2026 remains higher than the figure recorded in the same period last year.
