Michel Barnier Rejects UK Selective Access to EU Market
The negotiator states that single market membership requires full acceptance of the four European freedoms, including the free movement of people.
Former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier declared that the United Kingdom cannot cherry-pick specific parts of the European single market. He emphasized that European Union member states reject any attempt at partial or bespoke membership.
Barnier explained that access to the common market depends on accepting the four fundamental freedoms. This includes the free movement of goods, services, capital, and people. There is no à la carte single market model for future negotiations.
This stance follows discussions regarding closer economic ties between London and Brussels. The British government is evaluating options to reshape trade links established after leaving the bloc nearly six years ago.
The negotiator reinforced that the door remains open for the United Kingdom to return as a full member of the European Union. However, any move in that direction would require strict compliance with the same conditions imposed on other bloc members.
The requirement for the free movement of people remains a sensitive point in British politics. This issue was central during the 2016 referendum and continues to be an obstacle for agreements seeking greater economic integration.
