The president of Finland and the prime minister of Norway held a 90-minute phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. This contact marks a shift in European policy regarding direct dialogue with the Kremlin. The primary goal was to discuss diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

The initiative comes ahead of a round of negotiations scheduled for next month in Abu Dhabi. The meeting will be mediated by the United States and seeks to establish a path toward peace in the region. The Nordic leaders stated that the conversation was frank and substantive despite the significant differences in perspective that still remain.

The decision to contact Putin was made after consultations with the Ukrainian government and American representatives. Finnish President Alexander Stubb emphasized that geographic proximity to Russia makes European stability a direct priority. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre reinforced the need for de-escalation of the conflict.

The Russian government declared that a lasting peace depends on the full consideration of its interests. The Kremlin maintains its position on the causes of the conflict while Ukraine has expressed gratitude for the active support of the Nordic leaders. The conversation does not represent an official position of all of Europe but rather an individual action by the neighboring countries.

The global geopolitical landscape remains tense following recent diplomatic maneuvers. The search for channels of dialogue reflects concern over the human and material costs prolonged by the war.
