A local ceasefire began in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky under the mediation of First Lady Melania Trump. The measure started at 3 a.m. Tuesday and is scheduled to last until Saturday to allow for the delivery of basic supplies such as food and medicine.
Oleshky is located in the Kherson region, an area partially occupied by Russian forces since the invasion began in 2022. The city sits near the Crimean Peninsula and faces severe shortages of essential resources for the civilian population.
Simultaneously, Russia has intensified drone and ballistic missile attacks against several Ukrainian cities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported the launch of 16 missiles and 280 drones, focusing primarily on the country's energy sector and logistics infrastructure.
The conflict persists while diplomatic movements involving leaders from Finland and Norway take place. Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed efforts to end the conflict with these heads of state, although military escalation remains a daily reality.
The failure of previous agreements, such as the energy ceasefire announced by President Donald Trump in October, raises global geopolitical tension. The persistence of attacks against civilian and energy targets keeps the environment of uncertainty high regarding upcoming trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States.
