The British justice system has formally charged Mohmed Abdulkarim and Nouman Essghir under the National Security Act. Both men are 24 years old and reside in London. They were arrested following an incident at the RAF Fairford air base in southwest England. The site is used by United States bombers.
Abdulkarim faces charges of engaging in conduct that would assist a foreign intelligence service. According to police authorities, the country benefiting from the action is Iran. Essghir was charged with accessing a prohibited site with intentions prejudicial to the safety of the United Kingdom.
The incident occurred in late September and mobilized security forces including explosive ordnance disposal experts. Local residents near the base were evacuated during the search. The operation resulted in the removal of American B-1 bombers from the site shortly after the event.
The British police counter-terrorism command stated that the case is part of a series of recent events attributed to the Iranian state. Six other men remain under investigation and on conditional release while the process continues. The two defendants are scheduled to appear in court to proceed with legal formalities.
