Jordan conducted airstrikes in the Deraa and Suwayda regions of southern Syria last Monday. The Jordanian government stated it hit targets linked to extremist groups responsible for an attack on a Christian church in the kingdom the previous week.
Amman officials declared that the operation eliminated more than 20 fighters from the group calling itself the Islamic State. Jordanian authorities described the action as a necessary response following the attack that killed nine people in Karak.
However, the official version is challenged by reports of civilian deaths in Syria. Images of an elderly woman and three children killed have circulated publicly and intensified popular outrage in the region against foreign military intervention.
Analysts note that dissatisfaction is also directed at authorities in Damascus. There is growing pressure for the Syrian government to protect its citizens and demand explanations regarding the civilian casualties resulting from the Jordanian incursions.
This episode threatens diplomatic stability on the border between the two countries. The heightened geopolitical risk in the Levant region typically drives demand for safe-haven assets and may increase volatility in emerging markets and the value of the dollar.
