US legislative changes heighten risks over Taiwan and intensify the tech race between the two global powers.

The Democratic Party secured majorities in both the House and the Senate during the US midterm elections. The new legislative body is set to take office only in January of next year.

Analysts observe that this shift may harden the American stance toward Beijing. The focus is expected to fall on economic security issues and the status of Taiwan through new legislation and congressional hearings.

President Donald Trump is still seeking to maintain a fragile trade truce with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Meetings between the two heads of state are scheduled in Shenzhen and Miami before the legislative transition.

There is internal pressure to remove tariffs imposed during the current administration as a measure to combat domestic inflation. However, Chinese influence in the rare earth market and Beijing's growing power limit the scope of immediate policy changes.

The issue of Taiwan remains the greatest point of instability in the bilateral relationship. The US Congress has shown a willingness to challenge Beijing on initiatives regarding the island even when the executive branch adopts a more cautious approach.
