Algeria's Council of the Nation has unanimously approved the deployment of troops to Niger. The measure follows the signing of a military cooperation protocol between the two neighboring nations. The process still requires approval from the National People's Assembly to meet the constitutional requirement of a two-thirds majority.

This move represents the first Algerian military mission outside its borders since the 1973 war. The primary objective of the units will be the security of oil facilities within Nigerien territory. The decision follows high-level meetings between Niger's Minister of Defense and Algerian authorities.

The Algerian government had already sent Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets to Niamey airport at the end of August. These aircraft conducted patrols to support the local army following attempts at political destabilization in the country. The air reinforcement was requested by Nigerien authorities to contain internal crises.

The relationship between the two countries has undergone an intense rapprochement in recent months. Diplomatic and economic ties were strengthened after a previous period of bilateral tensions. The specific terms of the military cooperation protocol remain undisclosed.

The increased military presence in areas rich in natural resources raises the perception of geopolitical risk in the Sahel region. This scenario may pressure the volatility of risk assets and influence the flow of capital toward the dollar as a store of value.
