Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel could use blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies to avoid the impact of international financial sanctions. He made the remarks during an interview with a local television network ahead of national elections.
Netanyahu described blockchain as a national strategic tool. The government is seeking alternatives to protect the economy if Western countries impose banking restrictions on products from West Bank settlements.
The proposal drew immediate criticism from political opponents and the country's monetary authority. The Bank of Israel rejected the idea and stated that digital assets lack the technical capacity to serve as an escape route from global sanctions.
Party leaders labeled the vision a risk to national security. Protesters in Tel Aviv also questioned the feasibility and ethics of adopting a parallel financial system to bypass current international norms.
The discussion places the use of crypto assets at the center of a state's economic defense strategy. The debate reflects the growing tension between the need for financial sovereignty and pressure from global regulatory institutions.
