Vitalik Buterin is advocating for a hard cap on proof costs per unit of gas on Ethereum. This measure seeks to set a clear limit on the effort required from independent operators even when blocks are designed to be complex.

The debate has gained momentum following recent breakthroughs in zero-knowledge proof speeds such as those achieved by the ZKsync team. Using an NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 GPU they were able to process nearly all mainnet blocks in under ten seconds.

Buterin's proposal focuses on three formal verification priorities. The goal is to align the mathematical representation of execution with Ethereum specifications and ensure the security of the proof system.

Current computational cost analysis detailed in EIP-7904 focuses on native CPU execution and does not cover ZK-SNARK proof generation. The document suggests that there is no need for changes to gas fees for optimized execution but acknowledges that the workload for generating proofs is distinct.

The network faces the challenge of maintaining proof cost predictability while seeking to increase execution capacity. The deadline for EIP-7904 which addresses processing capacity is set for November 1st.
