State calculation flaw impacted networks like Optimism and Base after automated testing

A critical vulnerability in the Reth software has forced coordinated patches across various Ethereum infrastructure networks. The error allowed manipulated transactions to produce incorrect blockchain state calculations. Developers at Paradigm and partner teams identified the issue on November 5.

The defect resided in Reth's legacy state root calculation system. This component acts as a cryptographic fingerprint that validates balances and smart contract data. A failure in this process can cause discrepancies between nodes and disrupt network synchronization.

The risk extended beyond the Ethereum mainnet due to the use of the OP Stack in other layers. Networks such as Optimism and Base utilized the vulnerable method in their operations. The flaw was detected through automated stress tests known as fuzzing by the Tempo project team.

Security updates were distributed rapidly to mitigate operational risks. Reth received version 2.10.0, while Optimism released OP Reth v2.8.1 and Base released version 1.5.3. Developers classified the update as high priority for all node operators.

The episode demonstrates the fragility of an interconnected ecosystem that shares the same execution software. Reliance on common libraries means a single error can propagate across multiple networks simultaneously. Coordination between teams was essential to prevent disruptions in transaction processing.
