Data shows a drop in Moscow's progress and diesel sales hurdles as military casualties hit monthly records.

The advance of Russian forces in Ukraine saw a significant decline throughout 2026. Data shows that occupied territory grew by only 117.38 square kilometers during the first ten months of the year. The daily pace of advancement fell to 0.38 square kilometers, a sharp contrast to the 13.25 square kilometers per day observed in 2025.

Russian military casualties also reached unprecedented levels. Between January and October, the number of soldiers killed or severely wounded reached 381,300. October set a record with 54,400 casualties, exceeding Russia's monthly recruitment capacity, which is estimated between 24,000 and 30,000 people.

Russian strategy shifted in response to the loss of control in previously occupied areas. The government in Moscow intensified long-range attacks against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. In the week ending November 6 alone, more than 2,300 drones and 80 missiles were launched against the neighboring country.

Beyond battlefield challenges, the international market presents obstacles for the Russian economy. Traders in the United States are reportedly refusing to honor diesel supply agreements. This scenario of commercial isolation and military attrition puts pressure on the stability of Russian energy operations abroad.
