Major financial institutions led a sell-off of Bitcoin ETF assets in the United States between late 2025 and mid-2026. Nine prominent firms reduced their positions by 68,000 units of the cryptocurrency. This total movement represents a 14% drop in the volume held by investors who report data to the SEC.
Names such as Goldman Sachs, Millennium Management, and Brevan Howard spearheaded the exit. The primary reason was not a change in outlook on the asset but the conclusion of cash-and-carry arbitrage strategies. The profit gained from the price difference between spot and futures contracts decreased drastically during the period.
Conversely, long-term investors entered the market to absorb the supply. Wealth management platforms and sovereign wealth funds, such as Abu Dhabi's Mubadala, increased their allocations. This group offset part of the selling pressure exerted by multi-strategy funds.
The cost of maintaining arbitrage made the operation unattractive following the rate adjustments. The yield spread over Treasury bonds fell to levels near 0.6 percentage points. With narrow margins, trading desks closed their positions to seek returns in other sectors.
The shift in the investor base changes the market risk dynamics by replacing short-term traders with sovereign capital holders. The reduction in futures contract liquidity reflects the end of this global arbitrage cycle.
