SoftBank Group plans to invest $50 billion in Malaysia's technology sector. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that the funding will target artificial intelligence and data center infrastructure.
The project sites include Kuching, Sarawak, and the Malay Peninsula. The local government aims to establish the country as an AI-driven nation by 2030. A national strategy was launched this year to bolster the country's technological capacity.
SoftBank has already signed agreements with Grab and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad to explore digital development in the region. The partnerships focus on advanced computing services and new technologies. This initiative complements the conglomerate's expansion plan across Southeast Asia.
Other global giants also maintain financial commitments to Malaysian infrastructure. Google, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft have announced multi-billion dollar investments to build cloud regions and data centers. The country recorded 385.7 billion ringgit in sector investments between 2021 and the first half of 2026.
The expansion of major tech companies into emerging markets can increase foreign capital flow and influence the currency stability of these economies. This trend reinforces global demand for computing infrastructure, which impacts the valuation of assets linked to the semiconductor and energy sectors.
