Anthropic Reveals Financial Data in IPO Prospectus
SEC filing details revenue surge and highlights accounting challenges in valuing the AI business.
Anthropic filed its IPO prospectus with the SEC on October 26. The document provides the first detailed data on the operations of the company behind the Claude model.
In the first half of the year, the company recorded $16.3 billion in revenue. This figure represents a growth of nearly 14 times compared to the same period last year.
The reported net loss was $80.7 billion. About $72 billion of that amount refers to accounting adjustments for convertible stock instruments that do not directly impact cash flow.
The company posted an operating loss of $693 million for the semester. However, the second quarter alone recorded an operating profit of nearly $1 billion.
The prospectus highlights accounting discrepancies compared to competitors. Anthropic records the gross value of cloud contracts as revenue and lists platform fees as operating expenses.
Sales and marketing expenses jumped from $120 million to $3.2 billion in one year. The company also admits that a portion of its revenue comes from customers who violate its terms of use.
