Starknet Community Backs Study for Independent Blockchain
Historic vote supports transition to a quantum-resistant layer 1 network outside the Ethereum ecosystem

The Starknet community has voted in favor of researching a migration to an independent layer 1 blockchain. The process involved approximately 3,200 voters and achieved a 93.52% approval rate. StarkWare abstained from the vote to ensure the autonomy of the users' decision.
The result allows StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation to begin developing a technical whitepaper. A draft of the document is expected to be presented to the public in November. The network will continue operating as an Ethereum layer 2 during this initial study phase.
The primary motivation for the shift involves security against future quantum threats. StarkWare argues that Ethereum's timeline for becoming quantum-resistant is insufficient. The company has set a goal to reach this technical protection by 2027.
The approved proposal ensures that the STRK token will remain the network's native asset. There are no plans to create new tokens during the transition process. Existing bridges between Starknet and Ethereum will remain open and functional.
The move reinforces the debate over network sovereignty versus third-party security infrastructure. A definitive transition to a layer 1 would require a new binding governance vote. The network's quantum-resistant technology is still undergoing experimental testing without full security audits.
