Tampered Ledger Devices Lead to Digital Asset Theft
Hackers installed extra hardware in wallets sold by an authorized retailer to capture recovery phrases during initial setup.

Customers in Southeast Asia reported missing funds from Ledger hardware wallets that appeared to operate normally. The devices were purchased through CryptoBilis, an authorized retailer. The investigation revealed the presence of an additional electronic component hidden inside the device casing.
The intrusive device was designed to intercept the 24-word recovery sequence as it appeared on the screen during initial setup. The extra hardware used a mobile connection via an embedded SIM card to transmit this sensitive information to the attackers. The original security chip and operating system remained intact throughout the process.
The company confirmed the existence of an unauthorized implant in one of the affected devices on October 10. Technical analysis showed that the component read the recovery words and sent them externally. This allowed third parties to reconstruct private keys without needing to break the native hardware protection.
Estimates from the analysis firm Bitquery indicate that approximately 102 million dollars were stolen from 324 wallets across six different networks. Ledger has not yet confirmed the total value of the losses or whether all cases are linked to tampered devices. The incident exposes vulnerabilities in the supply chain of equipment intended for digital asset custody.
The use of hardware for storing private keys is a common practice to isolate assets from threats on internet-connected computers. However, device security depends on the physical integrity of the hardware from manufacturing until delivery to the end user. The failure in the distribution chain compromises the premise of total access key isolation.
