Canadian Extradited to US Over Illegal Crypto Mining Scheme
Ryan Roach faces charges for hacking US university supercomputers to mine cryptocurrency without authorization.
The United States Department of Justice confirmed the extradition of 35-year-old Canadian citizen Ryan James Roach. He faces charges for conspiring to access protected networks and causing damage to computer systems at higher education institutions.
Investigations reveal that Roach and his co-defendant, Mathiew James Stubbings, carried out attacks between June 2016 and December 2019. They exploited security vulnerabilities to steal access credentials and install cryptocurrency mining software.
The scheme used virtual private servers in several countries to hide the origin of the intrusions. Victims included universities located in states such as New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts.
This practice, known as cryptojacking, overloaded institutional machines and generated high electricity costs. The defendants face up to 10 years in prison and fines of 250,000 dollars if convicted.
The case highlights cybersecurity risks related to the unauthorized use of high-performance computing power. Protecting academic infrastructure has become a focal point for the integrity of global network systems.
