An investor on the Hyperliquid platform suffered losses of approximately $469,000 following a sudden surge in Ethereum prices. This market movement forced the closure of short positions totaling $19.8 million between October 18 and 19.
The liquidation process occurred in four distinct stages throughout the night and morning. The trader had to buy back their exposure at prices higher than the entry point, which resulted in the loss calculated before fees and funding payments.
Despite the financial setback, the wallet resumed its strategy of betting against the digital currency just a few hours later. Between 1:56 PM and 2:04 PM UTC on October 19, four new sell orders were opened, adding about 1,126 ETH to the portfolio.
Currently, the investor holds a short position of approximately 6,789 ETH, valued at about $16.2 million. The operation uses cross-margin with 25x leverage and has an estimated liquidation price of $2,434.67.
Volatility in crypto derivatives increases the risk of cascading liquidations for leveraged investors. Sharp price swings can force the automatic closure of large positions and impact asset liquidity in the global market.
