Major retail chains such as Marks & Spencer and Tesco have increased paternity leave to six weeks at full pay. This shift places these companies among the most generous employers on the FTSE 100 index.

The retail sector stands out by far exceeding the two-week statutory minimum required in the UK. Other brands like Ikea and Lego have also adopted extended policies for new fathers.

The gap between retail and sectors like construction or agriculture is widening in the British labor market. Advocacy groups point out that the lack of uniformity in policies hinders family balance across various segments of the economy.

The UK currently ranks 40th out of 43 OECD countries regarding the generosity of leave for fathers. Activists are pressuring the government for structural improvements to current legislation.

Rising operational costs from employee benefits may pressure profit margins for retail companies. This dynamic alters the perception of risk regarding productivity and talent retention in a competitive global market scenario.
