Financial markets faced a week of intense volatility due to a sharp decline in artificial intelligence stocks. The Nasdaq index fell 4.5% and ended a four-week winning streak. The S&P 500 followed the negative trend with a 2% drop.
This uncertainty was compounded by the release of the U.S. Consumer Price Index. September inflation reached 3.7% year-over-year, exceeding the 3.6% forecast. The Producer Price Index also rose 1.3% for the month and 6.3% for the year.
Rising living costs and pressure on oil prices are fueling concerns regarding Federal Reserve monetary policy. The market fears that interest rates will remain elevated for longer to curb inflation. This environment increases the cost of capital for major technological infrastructure projects.
Given this landscape, there has been a rotation of assets into sectors considered more resilient. The Dow Jones rose 0.7% as investors moved toward areas like healthcare and consumer staples. Portfolio diversification has become the primary strategy to mitigate risks within the technology sector.
