Tesla to Wind Down Cybertruck Production in Texas Next Year
Factory will shift to Cybercab manufacturing as the automaker prioritizes AI and robotics
Tesla plans to stop manufacturing the Cybertruck at its Texas facility around the middle of next year. The decision aims to clear assembly line space to ramp up production of the Cybercab. This autonomous vehicle is considered a core pillar in the company's strategy to establish itself as a robotics and artificial intelligence firm.
The stainless steel pickup truck, launched in late 2023, struggled to reach expected sales volumes. The initial target of 250,000 units per year was not met and recent data shows that deliveries remained well below the factory's installed capacity.
The transition reflects a shift in focus for Elon Musk who is now prioritizing the autonomous taxi fleet and the development of self-driving software. The company did not detail plans to move pickup production to other facilities. The Cybertruck project served as a technological development platform for innovations applied to the Cybercab.
The change in Tesla's industrial strategy may increase stock volatility as it reflects investor uncertainty regarding the transition to a business model focused on autonomous transport services.
