Premiership Rugby Club Debt Hits £366 Million
Financial losses mount as revenues drop and wage bills climb across England's top rugby tier
The collective debt of the ten Premiership Rugby clubs reached £366.1 million for the 2024-25 season. This figure marks an increase from the £342.5 million recorded previously. The data is part of a Leonard Curtis financial report on the sector.
Total financial losses for the clubs rose from £34 million to £36.5 million during the same period. The situation was worsened by a decline in revenue which fell from £182.2 million to £178.9 million. Wage costs increased and now consume 80% of the total revenue for the clubs.
Insolvency issues affect six of the ten clubs in the league. Only Northampton, Gloucester, Leicester and Saracens are not in this critical condition. The current business model relies too heavily on direct financial contributions from owners to keep operations running.
Global investors like Red Bull and the Black Knight group remain interested in the sport despite structural difficulties. Experts note that the transition to a franchise league format aims to make clubs more attractive to private capital. Deep changes in governance are considered necessary to ensure long-term sustainability.
