Oil Prices Plunge on Iran-US Diplomatic Breakthrough
Hopes for Middle East peace and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz send commodity prices down by over 7%
Oil futures saw a sharp decline this Monday. Brent crude fell 7.63% to $104.77 a barrel in London while WTI dropped 7.36% to $96.46 in New York.
The shift follows Iran's expressed willingness to resolve the conflict through talks mediated by Qatar. Tehran proposed a brief roadmap to normalize flow in the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear dialogues with Washington.
OPEC+ decided to keep production targets unchanged for December during a meeting held on Sunday. The group maintained September supply levels despite regional tensions that are forcing the redirection of exports.
Goldman Sachs raised its price forecasts for the barrel while citing persistent risks to global supply. The bank estimates an average of $105 for Brent in December and projects higher levels for the coming years if Gulf infrastructure remains affected.
The reduction of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East tends to lower the risk premium on financial assets. This may ease global inflationary pressure and favor appetite for higher volatility assets.
