SpaceX in Talks to Acquire Boost Mobile for Connectivity Expansion
Elon Musk's firm seeks ground infrastructure to integrate mobile services with its Starlink satellite network.
SpaceX is currently in negotiations to acquire the mobile carrier Boost Mobile or secure direct access to its network. Elon Musk's company aims to launch mobile phone services that complement its existing satellite broadband offerings.
EchoStar controls Boost Mobile and has a history of transactions with SpaceX. Last year, EchoStar sold a portion of its radio frequency spectrum to the company for 17 billion dollars.
SpaceX's strategic goal is to create a global connectivity platform. The proposed model combines orbiting satellites with ground infrastructure to provide hybrid networks for users.
Boost Mobile currently operates through wholesale contracts with AT&T and T-Mobile. The feasibility of transferring these agreements to SpaceX remains uncertain due to existing contractual restrictions.
The move impacted the telecommunications market this Monday. EchoStar shares rose 7.3 percent, while shares of traditional carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon fell by approximately 2 percent.
