Australian data center operator shares jump 43% as industry giants acquire up to 9.9% stake.

Shares of Australian data center operator NextDC surged more than 42% on Thursday. The rally followed moves by Goodman Group and Digital Realty to acquire a stake of up to 9.9% in the company. The firms conducted a bookbuild process after the market closed on Wednesday at a price of 9.50 Australian dollars per share.

NextDC's board described the move as opportunistic. The company noted that the action came just two weeks after it disclosed power supply delays at its M3 data center in Melbourne. Furthermore, the firm recently revised its financial projections for the 2027 fiscal year.

Goodman and Digital Realty informed investors that they have no current intention to launch a takeover bid. However, both companies reserved the right to change this stance in the future. NextDC stated that it had no prior knowledge regarding the final outcome of the share purchase.

The jump in the Australian stock occurred against a backdrop of weakness for the data infrastructure sector in the United States. Companies such as CoreWeave and Iren recorded significant declines in the previous session. The movement in the US reflected concerns over potential regulatory restrictions that could impact the pace of expansion for data centers focused on artificial intelligence.
