Nasdaq drops 5.52% as Democratic victory sparks fears over AI future

U.S. stock markets saw a sharp decline this Thursday. The Nasdaq index entered correction territory by falling 5.52% to close at 24,315.00 points. This movement was driven by political uncertainty following the U.S. midterm elections.

The Democratic Party victory raised concerns about tighter regulations for the artificial intelligence sector. Democratic candidates advocated for restrictions on building new data centers during the campaign. The technology sector was the hardest hit and plummeted 7.30% during the session.

The S&P 500 fell 4.36% and the Dow Jones dropped 3.44%. The sell-off also affected the financial and consumer discretionary sectors. The global impact was immediate and spread to Asian and European markets right after the polls closed.

Semiconductor companies suffered steep losses worldwide. The BlackRock chip ETF recorded a 12.79% decline. Manufacturers like SK Hynix and Samsung also faced significant devaluations in Asia.

Bitcoin followed the global downturn and fell more than 5% during the period. The market remains focused on the viability of heavy investments in technological infrastructure. Uncertainty regarding the financial returns of these projects is weighing on investor sentiment.
