Moderna and Merck have released phase 3 study results for a personalized melanoma vaccine. The treatment combined mRNA technology with Keytruda immunotherapy in patients who underwent surgery.
Data show the combination reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 42% compared to using immunotherapy alone. The risk of metastasis or death decreased by 38% among the approximately 1,100 patients analyzed in the clinical trial.
Oncology experts classified the results as a significant milestone for treating the disease. Doctors emphasize that this is the first time the addition of a compound has increased the efficacy of standard immunotherapy.
The vaccine acts as a guide to train the immune system to identify residual cancer cells based on the specific mutations of each tumor. Moderna plans to finalize the regulatory approval process to seek market authorization next year.
Despite optimism from the medical community, the financial market reaction was distinct. Investors remained cautious about the immediate financial impact of the technology even with the positive assessment from researchers regarding the clinical potential of the treatment.
