A SpaceX artificial intelligence division suffered a legal defeat in a lawsuit filed by the NAACP. The case is being heard in a federal court in Mississippi and challenges the operation of gas turbines at data centers in the Memphis area.
The lawsuit alleges that the company installed 27 turbines between August and December 2025 without the necessary environmental permits. The filing claims that the equipment emits pollutants that harm air quality and the health of local residents.
The company's defense attempted to dismiss the case by arguing that the turbines were mobile sources and therefore exempt from permits. The attorneys also questioned the NAACP's standing to bring the action under the Clean Air Act.
The judge presiding over the case rejected all of the company's arguments. The ruling concluded that the turbines do not qualify as mobile sources and that the group has the legal right to sue the company under current federal regulations.
This legal development keeps pressure on SpaceX's computing infrastructure operations. The case now moves to the next stages of trial in the Northern District of Mississippi court.
