Asian Markets Slide as Tech Sector Faces Renewed Pressure
Seoul and Taiwan markets hit three-month lows following Wall Street sell-offs and doubts over AI investment returns.
Asian stock markets closed mostly lower on Tuesday. The decline was driven by a fresh wave of selling in the technology sector following disappointing results on Wall Street. Indices in South Korea and Taiwan reached their lowest levels in three months.
The Kospi index in Seoul fell by 3.59%. Heavyweights such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics led the losses in the South Korean market. In Taiwan, the Taiex also dropped 3.59% with significant declines in shares of Mediatek and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.
The risk-off sentiment was amplified by global concerns regarding the sustainability of artificial intelligence investments. The negative performance of tech companies reflects uncertainty about the expected financial returns for the sector. Rising oil prices, fueled by geopolitical tensions, also contributed to investor pessimism.
In mainland China, the Shanghai and Shenzhen indices recorded losses amid disappointment over government stimulus measures. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong market bucked the regional trend and ended the day with a slight gain. Japan remained closed for a national holiday.
Instability in the tech sector and caution regarding the AI investment cycle may increase global volatility and boost the search for safe-haven assets, impacting both the dollar and Bitcoin.
