The number of passengers on flights in the United States has declined in the third quarter of this year. Airlines are facing higher fuel costs and have chosen to raise ticket prices to maintain profit margins.

Industry executives state that the strategy focuses on yield per ticket rather than total aircraft occupancy. American Airlines reported a reduction in its load factor during the recent period. The goal is to offset operating expenses that have grown significantly.

Data from September reveals that ticket prices rose more than 22% compared to the same period last year. Southwest Airlines observed an increase of nearly 50 dollars in the average ticket price. Even with the drop in passenger volume, revenues exceeded the companies' internal projections.

The airline sector is experiencing its first annual decline in volume since 2020. The cost of jet fuel remains the primary financial challenge for major carriers. The holiday season is expected to feature the highest prices for travelers in recent years.

This dynamic of high costs and protected margins reflects persistent inflationary pressure in the American economy. Rising consumer prices may strengthen the dollar by reducing discretionary spending and increasing caution regarding the trajectory of global interest rates.
