Thousands of Tunisians took to the streets of the capital this Saturday in one of the largest protests against President Kais Saied in recent years. The demonstration brought together labor unions, opposition parties, and civil society organizations in a joint effort against the current administration.
The march took place on Habib Bourguiba Avenue, the central hub of Tunis, under a heavy police presence. Participants protested against the rising cost of living and the decline in the population's purchasing power.
Union leaders openly criticized the concentration of power in the presidency. The group demanded the release of detained government critics and an end to restrictions on labor and democratic rights.
The movement included a diverse range of professionals, such as lawyers and doctors, alongside the unemployed. Signs displayed during the protest highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with poverty and the lack of fundamental freedoms in the country.
The backdrop of political instability and economic crisis in Tunisia increases risk perception in emerging markets, which may put pressure on the dollar against currencies from developing economies.
