Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has called an emergency session of parliament. The goal is to obtain authorization to provide military assistance to Saudi Arabia should the kingdom request official support.
The announcement took place during a ceremony at the Egyptian Military Academy. El-Sisi stated that the country is prepared to take measures to protect Saudi territory in accordance with the guidelines of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The Egyptian president emphasized that the initiative is strictly defensive in nature. He denied any intentions to attack or initiate conflicts against third-party countries in the region.
This move comes in response to a series of attacks carried out by Houthi rebels against Saudi Arabia. The offensives have targeted airports and oil facilities, including recent incidents at King Khalid International Airport that resulted in fatalities.
The internationally recognized government of Yemen has launched a military campaign to retake territories occupied by the Houthis. The escalation of tensions in the Middle East has put energy routes and regional stability on high alert.
