Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis has officially reopened the country's diplomatic office in Pyongyang. The facility had been closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This marks the first visit by a Swiss minister to North Korean territory in over two decades.

Cassis held talks with Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui and Workers' Party Secretary Jo Yong Won. The primary goal was to discuss the normalization of political relations and the resumption of direct dialogue. The office, which has been operational since October 19, will not have a resident ambassador.

The mission's activities will be coordinated by the Swiss embassy in Beijing. The Swiss government described the move as a concrete step to maintain communication channels with local authorities. The country aims to preserve its history of mediation on the Korean Peninsula.

During the visit, the minister also addressed security challenges in Eurasia and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. After concluding his agenda in Pyongyang, Cassis traveled to South Korea for meetings regarding regional tensions. The Swiss government remains committed to acting as an interlocutor in a landscape of limited international contact.

Diplomatic rapprochement in geopolitical conflict zones raises the perception of systemic risk and may increase demand for reserve assets like the dollar and Bitcoin.
