Russian authorities have detained a teenager suspected of planning an attack at a popular Moscow park. The operation took place after local security services received intelligence provided by the United States government.
The suspect, a Russian citizen, posted images on social media wearing tactical gear and a mask. He carried an object resembling an automatic weapon and shared photos of the Tsaritsyno complex with captions about the chosen location.
Searches conducted at the young man's residence uncovered the items used in the photos. The detainee's mobile phone contained searches related to terrorist attacks and records of subscriptions to extremist ideology channels.
The U.S. embassy issued an official warning on Saturday regarding a credible threat of a mass casualty event in the region. The park was temporarily closed to ensure the safety of visitors during the investigation.
Russia's Federal Security Service formally thanked the Americans for sharing the information. The country's investigative committee is now evaluating appropriate legal measures against the minor.
This security incident in a major capital heightens the perception of geopolitical risk and may increase volatility for global assets and the dollar during times of instability.
