Poland Declares National Mourning After Terror Attack in Krakow
Investigation reveals ideological motives behind shooting that left six dead
Poland has declared two days of national mourning following an armed attack in Krakow's historic center. A 24-year-old man opened fire on pedestrians last Saturday. The incident resulted in the deaths of six people and left 15 others of various nationalities injured.
Local authorities have launched an official terrorism investigation. Prosecutors state the suspect was influenced by far-right and ultranationalist ideologies. The shooter, who held a legal firearms license, is hospitalized in critical condition following a confrontation with police.
Three additional bodies were discovered at the suspect's residence in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski. Police believe the victims are the perpetrator's parents and sister. Investigators are working to confirm the direct link between the two locations.
Krakow's city center remains under movement restrictions. Flags have been flown at half-mast on public buildings and the traditional trumpet call at St. Mary's Church has been suspended. This is a rare symbolic event for the country.
Geopolitical instability in regions near conflict zones may increase global risk aversion and boost the dollar as a safe haven.
