In Paris, about 70,000 protesters filled the streets. Police used tear gas to contain groups that clashed with authorities during the demonstrations.
The French Interior Ministry confirmed the arrest of at least 290 people. Security forces strengthened protection measures to prevent looting and vandalism incidents recorded previously.
