US Treasury Plans $150 Billion Cash Rebuild
Refilling the Treasury account in the first quarter could tighten global liquidity for risk assets.
The United States Treasury plans to rebuild its cash balance by $150 billion in the first quarter of 2027. This move follows a projected $134 billion drop in the Treasury General Account balance during the fourth quarter of 2026.
Data released on November 2 shows that the American government estimates private market borrowing of $618 billion between October and December. The final figure reflects an adjustment due to a higher-than-expected cash balance in August.
For early 2027, the projection points to a borrowing need of $800 billion. The goal is to raise the cash balance from $850 billion in December to $1 trillion by the end of March.
The dynamic between the reduction and the increase of the Treasury cash balance directly alters the volume of bank reserves. Draining the account at the end of the year tends to inject liquidity, while subsequent replenishment removes resources from the financial system.
The reduction of global liquidity, caused by the draining of bank reserves during the Treasury cash rebuild, may increase selling pressure on risk assets like Bitcoin.
