Moscow Exchange to Launch Bitcoin and Ether Trading in December
The Russian platform will leverage stock market infrastructure to offer digital assets under new local regulations.
The Moscow Exchange announced that trading for Bitcoin, Ether, and the USDT stablecoin will begin on December 1. The project establishes the first organized digital currency market under new Russian legislation approved in September.
Transactions will be processed by the National Clearing Centre and will utilize the existing stock market infrastructure. Trading hours will run from 6:50 a.m. to 11:50 p.m. local time.
Non-qualified investors must pass a test to access the market. The annual purchase limit for this group is set at 300,000 rubles per brokerage.
The initiative comes amid international sanctions imposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union against the institution. The use of crypto assets for payments of goods and services remains prohibited in the country under current law.
Industry experts question the commercial viability of the platform due to global restrictions and operational costs. There is an expectation that the environment will be used primarily to facilitate cross-border payments between importers and exporters.
