The Bitcoin market faces a scenario where 11.1 million units of the digital currency have no identified owners. This volume represents approximately 55% of the entire existing supply in the system.

The lack of identification persists even with the growing presence of financial institutions and investment funds in the sector. Analysts suggest that this significant portion may belong to individual investors who choose self-custody.

Self-custody allows users to maintain direct control of their private keys. This practice challenges the centralization that occurs when assets are held on exchanges or by institutional custodians.

However, the amount without a clear owner may also include permanently lost coins. Many of these assets reside in wallets where keys were forgotten or belonged to individuals who passed away over the last decade.

The public Bitcoin ledger allows anyone to view the balance of each address without revealing the holder's identity. Analytics firms attempt to map this data by cross-referencing information from exchanges and known large holders.
