An OpenAI engineer has been arrested on charges of planting a hidden recording device in a company meeting room. Abdulrahman Alfozan, 35, allegedly received significant support from the Saudi Arabian government for his activities. Court documents in California reveal that the suspect maintained frequent communication with a member of the Saudi royal family.
The discovery occurred on September 30 when the company found the device connected behind a television and covered with toilet paper. Security camera footage captured the employee checking the equipment days later. The FBI made the arrest on October 9 and OpenAI terminated the professional's employment contract.
US prosecutors argue that the case poses a national security risk. Executives from the artificial intelligence firm held meetings with government officials in the same room where the device was placed. The Saudi government did not respond to requests for comment regarding the accusations presented in court.
The defendant held a one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia scheduled for three days after his arrest. Following the detention, a member of the Saudi military funded the flight of the engineer's wife and child out of the country. The US justice system is keeping the suspect in custody due to a high risk of flight.
