Mercado Bitcoin Guarantees Reimbursement After $40 Million Hack
Brazil's largest exchange suspended withdrawals following a security breach that impacted various digital assets across multiple networks.
Mercado Bitcoin has confirmed a security incident that resulted in the loss of assets valued at approximately $38 million. The company stated that customer balances remain preserved and that the institution will cover all losses resulting from the breach.
Deposit and withdrawal operations remain suspended indefinitely as a preventive measure. The exchange identified the flaw on November 2 and activated governance protocols to contain unauthorized access to its systems.
Estimates from security firms vary regarding the total amount stolen. Blockchain analysts point to figures between $40 million and $49 million distributed across networks such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Tron.
The exchange is working with strategic partners to recover the funds. To date, approximately $11 million has been blocked with the assistance of stablecoin issuers like Tether, which froze $4.5 million in USDT linked to the attack.
The case reinforces the need for constant vigilance over the custody infrastructure of digital asset platforms. The promise of full reimbursement aims to maintain user trust following the disruption of financial services.
