Coinbase Keeps 99% of Customer Assets in Offline Storage
Exchange details security protocols following major industry hacks to bolster protection against digital intrusions.
Coinbase reported that the vast majority of its customer assets remain beyond the reach of hackers. The company stated that 99% of cryptocurrencies are held in offline wallets known as cold storage.
The system uses fragmented private keys that are never fully assembled during transactions. Furthermore, the exchange has implemented emergency kill switches capable of instantly disconnecting signing keys from the network. Funds are moved to internet-connected wallets only as needed for immediate user requirements.
The company also established strict limits on fund movements between wallets. Unusual spikes in withdrawals are automatically blocked for manual review by the security team. The protocol assumes that employees may be targets of phishing attacks and requires multiple approvals for sensitive actions.
Financial data indicates that the platform held 377 billion dollars in assets as of September 30. The company emphasized that it does not lend customer assets without direct authorization and maintains 8.6 billion dollars in cash reserves. Artificial intelligence was identified as a growing threat vector that requires constant investment in defense.
