The exchange Coinbase reported that a security flaw at the analytics firm Amplitude led to the exposure of contact information for a portion of its users. The company denied any breach of its own internal systems. Customer funds remain secure and were not compromised by the incident.
The issue affected a limited group of platform users and clients of other companies served by Amplitude. Coinbase stated that it is notifying those affected via email in accordance with legal requirements. The company emphasized that it has not detected unauthorized access to its core infrastructure.
This case highlights supply chain risks within the financial sector. Even with internal security intact, data such as emails and phone numbers can be used by malicious actors in social engineering or phishing attacks.
The global financial sector has seen other recent information leaks. In South Korea, companies such as Bithumb and the brokerage Daishin Securities also reported incidents involving their clients' personal data.
The exposure of user data by third parties increases the risk of targeted attacks against investors. This may heighten market caution regarding custody security and the integrity of digital asset platforms.
