The JPYC stablecoin finished its first year of operation below initial projections. The circulating volume reached 3.2 billion yen, a figure far from the issuer's target despite several established corporate partnerships.

CEO Noritaka Okabe admitted that growth fell short of expectations. Data shows that while cumulative issuance reached 12.1 billion yen, a large portion of the tokens was redeemed quickly. The business model relies on maintaining assets in circulation to generate yields on bank deposits and government bonds.

Local rules for Type II fund transfer providers impose a limit of 1 million yen per transaction. This restriction hindered large companies that intended to use the asset for large-scale payments. The company attempted to streamline the process in May, but limitations on rapid and repeated transactions persist.

Corporate interest remains, with companies like Asteria seeking to build significant balances in installments. Pilot projects with financial institutions and logistics partners also make up the current landscape. Japan's regulatory agency is reviewing sector standards with a schedule for updates expected by 2027.

Instability in the circulation of fiat-backed stablecoins may raise risk perceptions regarding the liquidity of these assets. This scenario impacts the confidence of investors seeking alternatives to the dollar or Bitcoin in regulated environments.
