The Swedish Central Bank has asked lawmakers to reconsider the implementation of an official digital currency. The institution warns that the expansion of foreign stablecoins and the future digital euro could reduce the relevance of the Swedish krona in the national payment system.

The monetary authority argues that an e-krona would guarantee public access to state-backed money in a digital format. The use of physical cash in the country has dropped drastically and only 5% of Swedes used banknotes for their most recent purchase. The lack of a state-run digital alternative would complicate economic oversight and the protection of financial stability.

Deputy Governor Per Jansson stated that the krona needs a practical digital version to compete with international instruments. Developing this infrastructure would require at least five years of legislative and technical work. The system would also serve as a backup option during failures in telecommunications or power networks.

Although the bank has not yet reached a definitive position on the issuance, it is pushing for immediate preparations. Sweden is studying the use of the digital euro framework as a basis for its own project. The digital euro is scheduled for launch in 2029 if it receives approval from European Union bodies.
