Israeli authorities extradited Alexander Block to the United States this Thursday. The individual faces charges related to the theft of approximately $2.8 million from the Nomad Bridge platform. The transfer took place after the defense exhausted all legal appeals.
The case originated from a software update error at Nomad in June 2022. The flaw in the smart contracts allowed users to receive tokens without the necessary locking of assets on the originating network. The suspect allegedly performed test transfers before executing the main withdrawals in August of that year.
U.S. prosecutors filed charges including computer fraud and money laundering. The accused attempted to argue that the transactions were permitted by the platform's automated system. The Supreme Court of Israel rejected this argument and determined that exploiting programming flaws constitutes illegal computer hacking.
Following the initial incident, the suspect reportedly tried to negotiate the return of the funds in exchange for a bug bounty reward. Communication was cut off and Nomad contacted U.S. authorities. The suspect was detained at Ben Gurion Airport in May 2025 while attempting to travel to Russia with altered documents.
The court decision sets an important precedent by equating the exploitation of code vulnerabilities to traditional cybercrimes. This legal interpretation increases the regulatory risk for actors who use technical flaws in decentralized protocols to obtain illicit financial gains.
