The Central Bank of Malaysia has launched a distributed ledger technology platform for the issuance and custody of tokenized bonds. The system, known as SSDS+, tracks ownership history and the transfer of digital debt assets.
The new infrastructure connects directly to RENTAS+, the nation's real-time payment system. This integration allows financial settlement of these bonds to occur using currency issued by the central bank itself.
The project covers the management of conventional debt securities as well as Islamic bonds, known as sukuk. Although the initial focus is on the wholesale market, the monetary authority stated that the technology is prepared to support retail government and corporate bond issuances.
The launch follows a three-year roadmap for asset tokenization presented in November 2025. The initiative builds on previous tests conducted by the Digital Asset Innovation Hub, which involved major local and international financial institutions in exploring tokenized bank deposits.
The adoption of DLT platforms by central banks for financial asset settlement can increase operational efficiency and reduce settlement risks in global markets. This move expands institutional infrastructure for digital assets, which tends to influence risk perception and liquidity in crypto-asset ecosystems.
