US Banks Tighten Credit Standards
Federal Reserve survey shows stricter lending terms for small businesses and commercial real estate
US banks adopted stricter criteria for granting credit during the third quarter. This shift reflects growing concern regarding economic stability and the financial health of borrowers.
The Federal Reserve survey polled 79 financial institutions about their market practices. The study reveals that small businesses and the commercial property sector face the greatest difficulties in obtaining new funds.
Financial institutions increased requirements for premiums on higher-risk loans. The climate of economic uncertainty and specific industry challenges were cited as the primary reasons for this cautious stance.
In the commercial real estate segment, there was a widespread tightening of standards for construction and land development. Demand for credit in these categories declined during the period analyzed by the report.
Consumer credit also underwent significant changes. Banks are becoming more selective with subprime borrowers while easing access for clients with high-quality credit profiles.
